Guatemalan singer/songwriter/guitarist Gaby Moreno's 2012 album Postales album garnered tremendous critical acclaim and earned her a LATIN GRAMMY for Best New Artist in 2013. She now releases her new album, Illusion, on May 6th, 2016. After touring for Postales came to a close in 2013, Moreno went on a world tour with Hugh Laurie as part of The Copper Bottom Band. She released the holiday album Posada with traditional songs from Latin America in December of 2014. Most of 2015 she spent it touring extensively on her own and also as a special guest with the band Calexico in the US and Europe. Moreno began writing songs for the new album around the time when she started touring with Hugh Laurie. All this traveling, visiting new countries and seeing new places inspired her to gather “stories from the road”, as she likes to call them. “I write my songs with an acoustic guitar, with the exception of the song “O, Me”, which I wrote with a Charango I bought in Chile. In any case, it’s always one instrument that leads me to hum a melody and ultimately tell a story. A great production helps convey the emotions, but a good song needs to come from a real and honest place and be able to hold it’s own when just played with a guitar.” Produced by Gabe Roth (Co-founder of Daptone Records and Musical Director of Sharon Jones and The DapKings), Gaby and her band recorded all the songs on “Illusion” in just a few days. “The idea of working with Gabe was to approach music in a different setting and different way. We recorded most of the songs in a makeshift live room at Gabe’s mixing studio (Penrose Recorders) in Riverside, California, to an analog 8 track tape machine. After doing a few passes of each song, we would decide on one final, unedited take. I wanted to capture raw performances, embracing the imperfections.”

Moreno’s songs relate to feelings of desolation, desperation and hope, encompassing a wide range of emotions. “The choice of an album title was not an easy task. I had to suggest an overall idea of the concept of the album. After trying the titles of each of the songs, I decided that Illusion best describes this body of work. In Spanish, Ilusión means being hopeful or enthused with an idea or perception. At the same time, it’s exactly just that. A perception, and one that can be distorted and not real. It’s heartbreaking. Like our emotions when we try to hide them.” The first single of Illusion features Nashville soul/r&b singer Jonny P. “Love Is Gone” talks about a relationship bittersweetly coming to an end. While the lyrics suggest otherwise, the happy beat and rhythm hint at the possibility that all is not lost. “There is always room for hope and second chances. That’s the illusion”, Gaby adds with a smile.
